What is mediation?

Mediation is a procedure of alternative dispute resolution. It offers the possibility of going new ways when it comes to solving conflicts without having to take a case to court. Since the 1990ies mediation has become more and more important in Germany, too. It is used in order to resolve conflicts by individuals, enterprises and institutions. The awareness and the need to assign a professional mediator to settle disputes is getting stronger from year to year. It is important to know that mediation is not a negotiation or an arbitration. In the mediation procedure it is paramount that the parties to the conflict themselves will be enabled to develop a solution and that this process is intensively accompanied, closely monitored and guided. The mediator doesn’t take sides in the procedure. He or she remains neutral.
